Illustrator for Loathers:
[An Adobe Illustrator Tutorial for people who hate Illustrator, but should probably learn how to use the damned thing]

Seriously...I despise Illustrator. I love vector lines, but Illustrator...*hisses*
~LadyLaryssa convinced me that I needed to know it, and showed me how to work it one day last year. The method she taught was the 'correct way' but it was very convoluted and required several million steps to make a single line! Undaunted [because I *did* teach myself how to use Photoshop...] I decided there MUST be a better way to go about this! Lo and behold, almost a year later, I've gotten it down to a science!

And now, I share my secrets and research with you...

Pic used for the tutorial: Too Lazy...
Brush set used in the tutorial: Jimro's Lineart Brush
Program used in the tutorial: Illustrator CS3

I began doing almost all you mention (except the layer of green, hehe) and now is my favorite working tool. It should be added you can fashion your own personalized brush to work with Paintbrush (I designed one and barely use any other to do my pics; in fact, I barely use sketches anymore, love to draw directly.

Is there a need to use a tablet to trace it or can a mouse do the same (I mean with how it looks on yours..) ? Whenever I use the paint brush tool - the brush is just too thick lol...

I used a mouse for this! You can adjust the brush size up toward the top of the screen, near the menu bar. I never go higher than 1 pt, but it goes as low as you want it to. [the default smallest is .25 I think.]

Curiously, even at 1 px, sometimes the stroke of my brush is too thick, so I slect with the white arrow and type the desired wirth on the  window and then click Enter.

Would someone kindly tell me why it's important to lock layers in Illustrator as mentioned in the tutorial? Thank you so much, I really appreciate it!! <3

If you don't lock layers then you might accidentally move your content around. If you do that then when you finish outlining you might find out that the position of part of your image was shifted. If you lock the main layer with the sketch then you don't have to worry about the content shifting around.

Your line weight will depend on your settings in Illustrator. This can be controlled by decreasing your line weight (try .5 or .25 and so on until you find a weight that you like) and the type of brush you use. Both of these options should show at the top of the screen when you're on the too.

But for my non-school artwork i'll just stick with sai and photoshop, they're my besities. :meow:

I started out with Photoshop, but I avoided the pen tool like the plague. I recently decided that learning Illustrator would be pretty cool, and stuff like this really helps!

Just started out with Illustrator. I was looking at it with frustration, little smoke puffs coming out of my ears, thinking "BEGONE, FOUL BEAST!!!" and then looked up your tutorials. The title suited me perfectly so I read on and I can't thank you enough on behalf of my sanity and my laptop, which didn't end up flying out the window :)

Hej, i found another way to do this. :D

It worked for me as i opened an empty document and used the import/place function (i don't know it's exact english name but it's in the File-Menu, 9th from the bottom) to get in my sketch... after that it's the same thing as shown in the tutorial.

Is your layer locked or do you have the main color set to transparent?

Neither, the color is black and the layer is unlocked

Do you have a brush shape selected? Try selecting a brush from the palette on the right. If that doesn't work, try to make a new layer and use the brush on that layer.

Thank you for sharing this wisefull tip! *_* I have to use Illustrator to vectorize my drawings for homework (don't let me use Photoshop T.T ) But now I already feel like drawing in that software :la:

Although I can't use those brushes, your way to colouring is way easier tan mine :dummy:
